Back from the Break

Even though the students might have taken a break, farm work never ends. During this thanksgiving time, we planted a couple hundred garlic cloves using a homemade dibble. While dribbling, we found a nice raised bed of loose soil that had be fallow all summer! It was very convenient since it had been untouched for so long, it was the best soil in the garden and required little to no prep. Normally we would straddle the bed to plant and weed. This bed had to be planted from the side and will need to be weeded from the side. We mulched with leaf mold to hold moisture and deter weeds and cover the bed with loose hay to keep the leaves from flying away in the wind. What a productive break!
